Chapter Nine
Meg wriggled off Jack's lap and stood. She'd spent too long in his arms already. Allowed her guard to slip under the pleasure of his kiss. How easy it would be to lean on him, to let someone else take control for once. But after the program went to air, Jack would be gone, and life in Bindarra Creek would carry on. First, they had to find Nobby.
“It's getting late. We should get moving so we can cover some ground before we lose too much light.”
Jack moved toward the car. “I'll set up the tent. How far do you plan to go today?”
“Far enough to pick up any trail markers Nobby might have left. If we're in the right spot, we can start out early tomorrow morning, go further, and maybe camp along the river overnight.” She didn't want to think about not finding any signs to prove her olfactory senses right.
Jack climbed up on the rear wheel of the car and unhitched the straps securing the lid of the hard shell box that housed the tent. Moving around, he pushed up first one end, then the other, affording Meg a pleasing view of muscles and man.
She and Mary had more than the museum in common. Jack would walk away just like Carrick and Logan had, so best she didn't become too attached to his kisses and the way he'd held her, making her feel whole again.
He brought the ladder down and hooked it to the side of the car. Turning around, he caught her looking and grinned.
Warmth flushed her cheeks. “I'll pack a bag to take along. Water, snacks, a jumper because it gets cooler down in the gorge.”
“Great idea.” Laughter twinkled in his eyes.
She reached into the back of the Pajero and started rearranging things in her backpack. “Tomorrow, we'll each take our own backpack. We'll have to take swags too.”
He leaned up against the rear frame, arms folded, and watched her shuffle things in and out of the backpack. “Do we know where we're going?”
Meg tried hard not to look. She'd always been a sucker for strong arms. “The trail is marked out, but it stops before reaching the river. We'll have to mark out our own track from there so we can find our way back.” Her phone pinged and she pulled it out of her pocket to check her email. “We've got approval to use the drone.” Relief flooded her. Perhaps the drone would find Nobby quicker than they could on foot, or at least give them a direction to search in.
“The drone is in one backpack, so we'll have to limit supplies to the other.”
“I can carry some weight.” Meg teased him by showing him her own muscles. “I'm tougher than I look.”
“Didn't doubt that for a minute.” His gaze intensified as his fingers trailed over her arm. “You've got some good muscles there, Meg.”
“Thanks.” The word came out on a whisper, his touch stealing her breath.
For a minute, she thought he would kiss her again, but Jack pushed away from the car.
